+ SIBO Made Simple Book Summary

If you’re one of the 25 to 45 million Americans living with IBS, finding an accurate diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately good health can feel like an impossible uphill climb.

That’s where SIBO Made Simple comes in.

Experts estimate that over 60 percent of all IBS cases are being caused by Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). For those suffering from mysterious digestive woes, SIBO can be a beacon of hope—an answer that may have escaped you during years of bouncing between doctors, and one that actually has a path to treatment.

SIBO Made Simple is part patient guide and part cookbook (complete with 90+ low FODMAP recipes). It’s a must-read not just for those suffering from unwanted GI symptoms, but anyone looking to improve their gut health without sacrificing delicious food.

Despite the dooms day stories on many online message boards, the road ahead for SIBO sufferers may be complicated, but it is far from hopeless. In fact, there is an incredible array of strategies that can put you in the driver’s seat of your own healing.

Since Phoebe Lapine is an obsessive researcher and chef, rather than a clinical practitioner with a singular approach, SIBO Made Simple synthesizes and explains the varied ways that doctors, dietitians, bodyworkers, psychiatrists, and nutritionists approach gut healing.

By including expert medical advice from dozens of top SIBO practitioners, SIBO Made Simple provides resources for all phases of treatment, offering a clear culinary road map that can be customized to fit a large variety of gut-healing diets, such as the Bi-Phasic Diet, SCD, SIBO Specific Food Guide, and more.

With 90 delicious, easy, low FODMAP recipes that make a notoriously tough diet doable and delicious, SIBO Made Simple is a one-of-a-kind toolkit for learning about your condition and tailoring your diet toward healing. Every recipe adds anti-inflammatory ammunition, while offering suggestions for how to add problematic ingredients back in as you diversify your plate.

The silver lining of SIBO (and, yes, there is one), is that it will force you to learn more about your body and digestive system than you ever knew possible. SIBO Made Simple allows you to become your own intestinal detective, gut problem solver, and critter-free kitchen crusader.

+ Sample Email #1 (New to SIBO)

Subject line options:

  • The root cause of your IBS symptoms
  • Do healthy “good gut” foods make you bloated? Here’s why
  • Are you sick of the bloating and gas?

IBS is supposed to be what they call a "waste bin diagnosis."

Meaning, if all other possibilities are ruled out, doctors will chalk it up to Irritable Bowel Syndrome...which is really just a description of the symptoms you've been suffering from, not an answer in and of itself.

Unfortunately, especially for women who make up 75 percent of IBS cases, exhausting all other possibilities and finding the root cause doesn't always happen.

And that is a double shame, because the root cause is often not that hard to find.

It's estimated that 60+ percent of all IBS cases are actually being caused by SIBO: Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth.

SIBO is an issue of location, not type. You might have the right gut bacteria, but it’s in the wrong place—too far up your intestinal tract

When those critters feast on their favorite foods, i.e. all the things microbiome specialists tell you to eat—legumes, fermented veggies, onion and garlic—they release gas. So much that it can make you look 5 months pregnant after a meal!

If you’re someone who’s spent years bouncing between doctors looking for an answer to your digestive woes, SIBO can be an incredible light at the end of the tunnel, and one that actually has a path to treatment.

The only problem? That path is often so damn complicated.

That’s where my friend Phoebe Lapine comes in. There is an incredible array of strategies that can put you in the driver’s seat of your own healing, and her new book SIBO Made Simple will give you that roadmap.

Since Phoebe is an obsessive researcher (check out her podcast on SIBO here!), rather than a clinical practitioner with a singular approach, her book is an incredible patient guide that synthesizes and explains the varied ways that doctors, dietitians, bodyworkers, psychiatrists, and nutritionists approach gut healing.

She has resources for all phases of treatment, offering a clear culinary road map that can be customized to fit a large variety of gut-healing diets, such as the low FODMAP diet, Bi-Phasic Diet, SCD, SIBO Specific Food Guide, and more.

+ Sample Email #2 (SIBO Diets)

Subject line options:

  • Is your elimination diet getting in the way of actual healing?
  • Even food break-ups don’t have to be forever
  • Diversifying your diet doesn’t have to be hard

Like any breakup, the saddest part of calling it quits with a food group is not the initial goodbye. It’s that you’re going to have to imagine a new forever.

After months or years apart, there will occasionally be a dish (say, a slice of gooey pizza) that brings it all rushing back, and reminds you of what you lost.

With FODMAPs or a SIBO Diet though, it doesn’t have to be like this.

For the foods that are causing symptoms, it isn’t a goodbye, just a see you later.

While starting a low FODMAP diet is scary and painful in its own right, I’m popping into your inbox today to tell you that it doesn’t have to be a life sentence. In fact, it was never meant to be.

It’s wonderful that so many mainstream GI’s and physicians are now recommending cutting FODMAPS. But they rarely give you a plan for bringing these ingredients back into your life. Even though research suggests that being on a long-term low FODMAP diet actually can harm your gut balance.

Luckily, my friend Phoebe Lapine has given you a complete roadmap in her new book, SIBO Made Simple. Not only does it include 90+ low FODMAP and low allergen recipes, but she also tells you how to re-introduce problem foods back into your diet slowly over time.

There’s guidance on the process, a sample schedule, and places for you to record what you ate, the quantity and how you felt.

She’s also included an “onwards” section for each recipe that gives you an example of one higher fodmap food to add in, at a low manageable quantity for reintroduction. Her ultimate goal is to get us eating as diverse a diet as possible without fear.

If you’ve been struggling with SIBO or some of its common overlapping issues—histamine intolerance, yeast overgrowth, clogged sulfur pathways—SIBO Made Simple has also covered all those bases with a dietary restriction key that includes these concerns and some of the most popular SIBO diets, such as the Bi-Phasic Diet, SCD, SIBO Specific Food Guide, and more.

Is there anything you're struggling with right now with your elimination diet? I'd love to hear your story.

+ Sample Email #3 (SIBO Literate)

Subject line options:

  • The SIBO patient guide we’ve all been waiting for
  • A complete meal plan to heal the gut beyond SIBO
  • How this SIBO patient turned her story into a solution for everyone

There’s no one approach to SIBO, which is what often makes patients so confused.

The roadmap is far from linear and streamlined. Rather, it involves many forks, detours, and steep uphill climbs, that often lead you to exactly where you started.

Luckily, my friend Phoebe Lapine has finally created a patient guide to help you navigate the road ahead: her fantastic new book SIBO Made Simple.

In this comprehensive SIBO bible, Phoebe will not only help you navigate root causes, testing and treatment options, but she also provides an incredible array of recipes that are coded for all your SIBO dietary concerns—low histamine, yeast & candida friendly, low sulfur—and some of the leading SIBO diets: low FODMAP, Bi-Phasic Diet, SCD and the SIBO Specific Food Guide.

So many SIBO patients like you have chronic, undiagnosed digestive symptoms, or have an overlapping autoimmune condition that most doctors don’t fully understand. One of Phoebe’s talents is in distilling tough medical information like the connection between immune dysregulation, bacterial overgrowths, and leaky gut—into terms that patients can actually digest.

Phoebe has been writing about her health struggles for years, including her fight to overcome Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Thankfully for the rest of us, she turned her SIBO diagnosis in 2017 into ammunition for a whole new stream of resources, including her fabulous podcast SIBO Made Simple.

Since she is an obsessive researcher and curator of information, rather than a clinical practitioner with a singular approach, her book synthesizes and explains the varied ways that doctors, dieticians, bodyworkers, psychiatrists and nutritionists approach this type of gut healing. The caliber of experts she gathered for this book is incredible!

In sharing what she learned, SIBO Made Simple will help you understand:

  • Why women are so much more prone to gut issues like SIBO
  • All the ways to navigate your “kill phase”
  • What to put in your SIBO medicine cabinet for managing side effects and symptoms
  • Where probiotics and prebiotics fit into treatment
  • An overview of available dietary approaches
  • How to make your treatment work in tandem with your diet
  • Advice on managing food fears while treating SIBO
  • How to safely reintroduce ingredients, diversify your diet and prevent relapse
  • And so much more!

One of the aspects of her work that makes Phoebe such a unique voice in the SIBO space is that she is a CHEF! SIBO Made Simple is also packed with over 90 delicious SIBO-friendly recipes (all soy-optional and completely free of gluten, corn, refined sugar, and dairy).

  2. 60% of all IBS cases are said to be caused by Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).
  3. SIBO is an issue of location, not type. You can have perfectly good critters, they’re just too far up your intestinal tract.

  5. People who react to “good gut foods” like kombucha, legumes and sauerkraut, might have an overgrowth at play.
  6. SIBO is a sign that something in your digestive system has gone wrong, not a disease in and of itself. You must uncover your root cause— the reason the bacteria are overgrowing. Often there are several.
  7. One of the most common causes of SIBO is a simple bout of food poisoning.
  8. Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions like Hashimoto’s, Celiac, IBD and Endometriosis are also big risk factors for SIBO.
  9. Stress can cause SIBO, and often treating SIBO can be a huge source of stress in and of itself.
  10. SIBO can be resolved with medication, but often it takes many habit changes and diet tweaks to heal your gut for good.

Luckily, this book exists to help you take a breath, navigate the confusing SIBO contradictions, and find your path forward. #SIBOMadeSimple
